A few 4L80E shift kit and upgrade questions.
#1
Hey guys.
I found a new in box 4L80E Transgo shift kit on my local Craigslist. It looks to be an older kit. It doesn't have a blue box like the HD2 kit has. Also, it comes with a VHS tape in the box.
Is this essentially the same kit as the HD2?
I'm looking to save money where ever I can, but if the HD2 kit is the way to go, I'll order that one.
Also, I'm swapping my 4L80E in. Meaning, it's currently out sitting on a bench. What kind of upgrades would you guys do to the transmission while it's completely out?
Thanks!

Here's another one.

I asked the seller if he know what the difference was between this kit and the hd2 kit. He didn't know.
Does anyone know what the difference between the kits is?

That is an old version of the kit that did not supply a separator plate and you had to modify a factory plate. The issue with that kit is installing the plugs. I have seen where they blow out or guys wreak the plate by bending it. The new kit comes with a plate but it has a downfall IMO. Its a stacked plate with three layers. The issue is when you go to drill the plate you have to be careful and drill slow to not create any burs between the layers. If you do you could cause cross leaks IMO. With either kit you can skip using their mods or plate design and just install the kit. Then there are a couple of mods you can do to the center support, direct drum and feed hole passage way in the separator plate to make a dual feed mod that kit features. I personally have been installing a modified TG kit in builds I have done and have been pretty successful. Like any shift kit there are things I add or leave out based on builder preference.

Dude, awesome. Thanks so much for explaining that. I've been searching for information to no avail.
I'll pick up the older kit and then research modding the drum for dual feed. I'm new to the 4L80E, but look forward to learning about it. I'd like to make it last as long as possible without a full blown rebuild.
Thanks again. I really appreciate it.

Its pretty easy to do and its a mod that TH400 builders have used for years. Lets face it an 80E is just the next generation 400. Here is a post from one of our MODs that I helped with his build. I would suggest using a th350 parking pawl plug to plug the case unless you can find a set screw that will work in the case. Just make sure not to install the plug to far so in the future you can remove the center support without disrupting the plug. HTH Vince

Cool. Thank you. It'll be nice to have an 80E in so I won't have to worry about breakage. I'm going to have an 80E, NP149, and a 3000 stall converter with a stock 5.3L. LMAO.

Any suggestions on where to order transmission parts? I've been googling th350 parking pawl cap plug and haven't been successful. I have found one for the 700r4 but wasn't sure if it was the same one. Maybe I'll stop by a local transmission shop. Does 10.00 sound about right?

The plug was used in 200C, 200-4R, Th350, 700, 4l60E, 4l80E and probably a few other GM units. $10 for the plug sounds pretty high. I get a lot of my stuff from WIT if that helps you any.
