Default Nv3500 power capability

Hey guys

You hear all these horrible things about nv3500s. I'm looking at put 450ish rwhp who through one. Now I know a t56 will be in the future, however how reliable will the nv3500 be in the meantime?

Just like to avoid blastin it to pieces within a few dyno runs

and ^^ that guy's since added a turbo to that 496

when i was researching my 5.3 swap, i personally talked to the guy in charge of the Silverado program at Joe Gibbs Racing a few years ago. the NV3500s in their supercharged 4.8s (though they weren't making quite as much power/tq as you're looking for) were all bone stock with the exception of the shifter.

you'll be fine. this trans only has a bad rep from the jealous 4L60 guys who have to do a rebuild after a CAI

The only negative thing I hear is that there is nothing much that can be done to fix them (nothing that's actually worth the effort anyway), so keep a bunch on standby, use good fluid and change it often and get a good clutch and flywheel.

The NV3500 doesn't like to be manhandled with the stock shifter in it. If you are too forceful with it - you will bend the shift forks unless you have an aftermarket shifter with travel limiters in place. My 3500 took 550 hp for quite a long time before complaining. It now has a pretty loud "whine" in 3rd gear - but still works fine.

+1 on the stock shifter. Hurst stopped making theirs in 08 & you can't find them anywhere now, but you can at least get a shift handle that don't have the bushing in the bottom - which'll make it feel firm & solid.

and mine's been whining in every gear except direct since i owned it - and that was with a stock 4.3 for the first 150k mi. bad enough i've had 3 people ask when i added the blower
