can anyone tell me why they put what looks to be 3 inch duals with no connecting pipe on the 2500 hd's with 6.0 from factory? i would think that would be a bit overkill and especially with no x or h pipe

I am sure they did plenty of research and it was most fuel/power efficient. You have to keep in mind this motor is a 373" I think(close if not right on) and makes 300-330 HP. It isn't a small block from 20 years ago making a killer 225 hp spinning 4000 rpm max.

Most people are in love with the factory set up because you hack off the muffler and run some short pipes and you have a true dual set up that can flow like crazy.

364ci. And he's right: I'm jealous of that setup because it is SO cheap and easy to make it into a true dual exhaust.

sounds absolutely horrible with exhuast... i put some obx longtubes that go into a 3" single exhuast and it sounds soo much better. i hate true dual exhuast, soo glad i went with single. i did however pick a muffler that went from single 3" in to dual 2-1/4" out.

I would x-pipe it further forward and throw a couple nice muffs on there; pipe it to the back and call it a day.

So they didnt have to have 2 different exhausts for the 8.1 and the 6.0.

It could have something to do with it, as I'm sure the General is all about saving money, but I don't believe it is the sole answer either, as the 1/2 ton Sierra C³, Denali and Siverado SS trucks also all had the same exhaust configuration. So they ended up with multiple truck configurations (regular cab, extended cab, crew cab & SUV) between the 1/2 ton and larger models with the same style exhaust system and definitely no one size fits all scenario.

Actually, I've heard numerous times that it is true dual BECAUSE the truck has an 8.1L option and that the exhaust is actually too much flow for the 6.0. I'm doing long tubes on mine and will be going to a Y pipe with a single 3" all the way back.

Default pipes

everybody I have talked to says only one side of the muffler flows- the other is blocked off. it y's into a single exhaust pipe. the pipes are 2 3/4, not 3. I just installed a spintech dual 3" in/out on my 05 8.1, with dual 2.5 tailpipes to the one side. sounds really good, just a little rumble

have a nice factory muffler setup if anybody needs to replace theirs!
