It won't disrupt the flow but it will keep large debris out from clogging the pump. We actually use it in a chiller application.
Also, on the suction side you should use a rigid reinforced hose so it doesn't collapse. The standard fiber reinforced PVC clear hose you have now will soften up in the heat and collapse on the suction side... Looks like standard clear reinforced PVC. Leave that stuff out in the sun, it will soften up.
The other type stuff I linked is what we use on the suction side. Its meant for jacuzi's and similar type applications.
