Do you have any pics? Some pitting is bound to happen...I've sealed up some pretty nasty aluminum heads, manifolds, etc in the past and gotten lucky. On vehicles with paper or composite gaskets, I've often coated the gaskets with a thin layer of Toyota black FIPG (basically Toyota brand RTV, but I've found that it works better than RTV does), and sometimes have used it on rubber gaskets/o-rings with good results. I'd try sealing whatever it is that you're sealing the right way though, and if you end up with a leak, swing by a Toyota dealer and shell out the dough for the oil pan/cam housing FIPG...the stuff truly is awesome.

Whoa, that's pretty bad, wasn't expecting to see so much corrosion, and so deep looking also. If I were putting it back together, I'd also put something on the block side of the water pump gaskets, only I like to use the black Toyota FIPG oil pan/cam housing sealer, which is like Toyota's version of RTV, except it has a bit of a different texture to it and is very forgiving. Just my preference, if you've had good luck with RTV in the past roll with what works for you!
