I have a theory to that if you can answer the above question...
550hp 496ci chevy. it had 9.5:1 cr with a hydraulic roller cam in it. the filter let go at 6500rpm on the dyno. the oil pressure prior to collapse was around 70psi if I remember correct. they were of course using regular dino oil to seat the rings and break in the engine. once the oil pressure dropped to ZERO they immediately backed off the throttle but not before smoking all the main bearings

I would be very interested to hear your theory. My theory is PIECE OF CHIT filter. at 70 psi the filter should not have let go bottom line.

Two things could have happened here.

Loss of oil pump prime. This is caused from air being trapped in the pickup tube, on the suction side of the oil pump. of course when this problem is found, a mechanic will replace th filter and most times the air that was trapped is now gone from the system, Thus blaming the filter and not the method in which you changed your oil.

Second thing to ponder would be a sticky or bad oil bypass valve that didn't open corectly or not at all. Not too uncommon actually. But hard to diagnose.

Eitherway, I don't buy FRAM. But I think it's very easy to blame a piece of hardware without really getting into advanced diagnostic techniques. Of course, these diagnostics are sometimes way over the head of most here on the board including myself.
I myself find it easy to blame hardware then my own skills as a backyard mechanic.

I had a Fram fuel filter come apart in my 1994 Sonoma. I started having problems with the engine cutting out at highway speeds. I started tracking down what the issue could be, discounting the fuel filter because it had been changed about 2 weeks prior. Long story short, I decided to check the filter. When I took it off, the whole interior of the filter rattled around when you shook the filter. I guess a weld had come loose. When the fuel started flowing, the loose piece would get sucked up against the fuel outlet and starve the engine. Replaced the filter with an AC and no more issues. I will never buy another Fram filter again.
