AC Compressor
#1
Spun the truck to about 6400 this past weekend and the AC compressor locked up. It was only a few years old and was the stock replacement. No previous issues with the AC and it was not on when it locked up, the vent fan was on, but not AC. Anyone had this happen and any recommendations for after market compressors that can take the higher RPMs?

The stock tune for a 2002 truck disables the A/C at 100% throttle or 5250 rpm if not at 100% throttle. Now that you inspired me to look this up, I think I will change my disable rpm to something reasonable, maybe 3000.
Can anyone think of a reason to keep the clutch engaged above 3000 rpm?

I did a WOT pull on the freeway once with the A/C on and it fried the A/C clutch, it slung black melted **** all over the engine bay. I am not sure it is related to the pull but it sure seemed like it.

I was thinking the black melted stuff was friction material is why I asked.

Mine used to disable at 4000, or heavy throttle, whichever it saw first. It worked well for me, stayed on during spirited acceleration but not heavy acceleration.
And it sounds like the pulley bearing locked up, not the actual compressor. If the compressor did then it may have been on during the pull so you need to get your tune looked at if that's the case. If the pulley bearing locked up then that was just bad luck..
