Default Should I change it or not ????

I have a 01 GMC 1500 5.3 w/ 150k I would say easy miles. I have checked the trans fluid often but never changed it, its has a good red color, doesnt smell burnt and feels fine. I was thinking about changing the filter and fluid this weekend, but have read on many threads not to change it w/ high milage....can I get some help it would be appreciated.

Drop the pan, change the filter, new gasket, and replace the lost fluid. No flush.

If you change the fluid, it will break soon thereafter.

I wouldn't even bother with the filter.

DON'T.

The theory here is that fresh fluid has a detergent in it to help clean things. Problem is that there is probably some debris in cracks that might come loose with the new fluid. This debris might be to much for the filter to handle and get in the VB and cause problems.

Having said that to scare you, Fluid that old does not lubricate or cool very well. One option would be to do a good flush on the radiator section to try and clean in out and change as much fluid as possible along with a fresh filter. Then going back in a few hundred miles and drop the pan again and put in a new filter.

You could also leave it alone and hope for the best. Could be a gamble either way though.
