Consistently running 7.5 in the 93 mph range. I noticed the trans temp getting warm on drives to work and around with the family, then the converter surging in and out of lockup. some days it was fine, some it surged, some it wouldn't lock. I have my tuner plug in and verify it was not electronic and the lockup was being engaged 100%.

A bit worried, I talked to Robert about it. He said i probably smoked the converter. It was a mild converter to begin with and im making way more power that we originally talked about. My tuner agreed. I ordered the PI vig 3000 multi disk. While waiting for it to come in, I started pulling the trans for a converter swap. I pulled the drain plug and it was COVERED in metal. Worse than ever before. I talked to Robert and sent him the unit for a total inspection and upgrade the 3/4 clutch set to the new th350 clutch unit.

Hes got the unit 9/20 and has been working on it.
I have a 08 Silverado with a mild built 4l60e and it has a 3200 FTI converter in it and I'm dealing with the same surge problem. Sometimes it wont lock up, sometimes it surges in and out of lock up as well. Does that mean the converter is going out?

On engine alone I am making about 425 HP at the flywheel. Make about 575 crank on spray. I don't spray while towing, but I have sprayed the thing just playing around for the hell of it. That engine sees 6,200 rpm multiple times daily at WOT.

My 2nd 4L80E is behind a L18 8.1 with the 420 HP mercruiser cam in my 1999 Tahoe. I also spray 150 shot into it. Makes about the same HP as the small block but ALOT more torque.
Do you plan on fabricating a stolen dyno sheet to prove your claims? Asking for a friend

I have been talking with the new owner of the truck - Kuntryquest.

He and the local trans shop found a lot of issues with the unit and decided it best to bail on it all together and start from scratch. I believe they reused some of the hard parts that were still in good working order and it was built to RPM Transmissions spec sheet. New case, VB, some hard parts and same converter. The truck is now driving great, fluid temp, converter lockup, towing.... everything is good. Im glad to see its finally working after the years of crap i went through and thousands of dollars PLUS the new owner's time, money and frustration.

cliff notes to 25 pages of thread. I should have listened to the masses and went 80 years ago and I do not recommend Transbuilderguy.

I had a feeling things would turn out this way... Glad it's done and over with.

Don't be too hard on yourself. Sometimes you need to learn the hard way.

So that's what ultimately happened with that endless 4L60 build. Glad I just went with the whole Gen 5 truck.............

I did the same with a local builder and a reputable level 7 trans.

In the end, it doesn’t matter what you do. Go to an 80e and never look back.

I’ve had my 80e swap almost a year now and I have had zero issues out of it. Zero.
