homemade caltracs
#1
Hey guys,
I was looking to make my own caltracs and have everything I need except the rod ends. Would there be any reason to buy the rod ends that have the swivel on the end? I can get the straight stationary rod ends cheaper, and figured they would do the same thing. I think when all said and done, those rod ends are just going to stay straight anyways. Let me know what you think. Thanks. Tim.

go to www.daymotorsports.com and find a rod end they are like 8-12 bucks a piece. theres several threads on homemade cal tracs. I made my own as well, i used all dirt track parts and i had around 60 bucks in mine

I know they aren't too expensive at summit either, but I can get the others given to me and was wondering why it would need the swivel end. If it does, it does, but I figured that the bars would be parallel from bracket to bracket at all times unless something bad happens. Thanks for the info.

I was thinking that the swivel rod ends would be more of a side to side thing. Seeing as they are just up and down, I figured that I would weld some thick wall tubing to all thread and having that be my rod end. The tubing would ride on the pivot bolt. I figured why have something that is capable of going side to side when it's not supposed to. If it does go side to side, there another big problem going on. Only binding concern I have is if the bolt and the tubing rust together and I figured I would put a grease fitting on it to fix that. I have all the materials to build it this way, so it's not going to cost anything if it's a flop.

Doesn't seem too hard to do, I have only done the shopping list, but its a pretty simple concept. I'll keep you posted on how it goes. The hardest part sounds like getting the rubber bushing out from the front leaf spring. I haven't yet got the aluminum part. Going to have to measure that one, not sure of the size.
