I know everyones answer is going to be True-Trac
But is the g80 really that bad? I'll be ordering 4.11's for my truck soon and wanted to know if you think the G80 would last behind 400rwhp?
It's my DD and was concerned about changes in drivability. Any insight would be nice.

It might survive, it might not. I still have my G80 in and am pushing 450/500ish, but I have a TT sitting under my bed that I have been meaning to install.
My decision process went like this: Will the G80 take a crap and kill my ring and pinion because I am putting too much stress on it? maybe, others have been fine but still, others making less power have not been so lucky. Will it take out my non-built transmission at the same time? Less likely but still possible. Is it worth $400+$100 for the truetrac and install kit for me to not have to worry about being stranded ($80 tow truck), having to replace the differential ($400+$100) AND replace my ring and pinion (haven't priced them, but $200ish)? Yes, to me, it's worth the $500.

I would only be guessing about the reliability of the G80 in the 14 bolts but I would imagine they would take more abuse than a 10 bolt one. Hopefully someone with more knowledge about them will chime in.

The TBSS runs a 14bolt with a G80 and not everyone swaps them out but then you have to take in the fact that the TBSS is lighter so thats less moving mass upon take off. The 14bolt is stronger but i dont know how strong it will be. I know under a 5.3/60e my g80 couldnt hold stock power on a good launch. I do have a 10 bolt, not a 14 bolt. I would have to agree with TX Tahoe, just save up for it or change it now vs replacing a 200.00 set of gears along with a master install kit and labor if you arent the one doing the install.
