Default ABS & Brake Light coming on at the same time

Hey Everyone, in Dec the G80 in my rear axle grenaded, so I replaced the gears with 4.56's (I haven't changed the front yet) and a Detroit TrueTrac. Now every day after about 10 miles of driving my ABS and Brake Light illuminate on my dash. Here's the kicker though, if I keep my speedo above 60 (actually going around 54) I can keep the light off for longer. If I start the truck and immediately go through some red lights with stop and go traffic, it will turn on as early as a mile. Also my Service 4WD comes on every time I start it, but never shows up while driving.

Codes are CO222 & CO226. I also am getting a P2771 and CO327 for the 4WD issue. The 4WD switch panel illuminates at start up, but nothing lights up after though.

And just throwing this out there too, the air bag light will randomly come on maybe once every other week or so.

2004 Sierra 5.3 Z71 with 35" tires.

Can anyone help me with these?

Did the old axle have sensors on the wheels? It sounds like a sensor mismatch.

Circuit Description
As the wheel spins. the wheel speed sensor produces an AC signal. The EBCM uses the frequency of the AC signal to calculate the wheel speed.

Conditions for Running the DTC
C0221, C02237 C0225 and C0227
The ignition is ON.

C0222 and C0226
  • The ignition is 0-3.
  • The vehicle speed is greater than 13 km/h (8 mph).
Conditions for Setting the DTC
C0221 and C0225
The EBCM detects an Open or shorted wheel speed sensor or wheel speed sensor circuit for 500 milliseconds.

C0222 and C0226
The corresponding wheel speed sensor signal is less than 6 km/h (4 mph) for 5 seconds, or 120 seconds in order to set both DTCs.

C0223 and C0227
The EBCM defects an erratic signal from the corresponding wheel speed sensor for 105 milliseconds.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets
C0221, C3225
If equipped, the following actions may occur:

  • The EBCM disables the ABS/TCS/VSES.
  • The ABS indicator turns ON.
  • The TRACTION OFF indicator turns ON.
  • The message center displays the SERVICE STABILITY SYSTEM message.
C0222, C0223, C0226, and C0227
If equipped, the following actions may occur:

  • The EBCM disables the ABS/TCS/VSES/DRP.
  • The ABS indicator turns ON.
  • The TRACTION OFF indicator turns ON.
  • The red brake warning indicator turns ON.
  • The message center displays the SERVICE STABILITY SYSTEM message.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC

  • Repair the condition responsible for setting the DTC.
  • Use a scan tool in order to clear the DTC.
  • After the DTC is cleared and the ignition is ON, the ABS indicator may remain ON until the EBCM completes a power-up self test. This test concludes when the vehicle reaches a speed greater than 13 km/h (8 mph) and the wheel speeds are verified by the EBCM.
Diagnostic Aids
Operating the vehicle on extremely rough terrain can set DTC C0223, C0227 or C0229 even if the system is functioning normally.
Thoroughly inspect connections or circuitry that may cause an intermittent malfunction.
If the customer's concern is that the ABS indicator is on only during humid conditions such as rain, snow Of vehicle wash, thoroughly inspect the wheel speed sensor circuits for signs of water intrusion. Use the following procedure in order to help isolate the problem area:

  1. Spray the suspected area with a 5 percent salt water solution.
  2. Drive the vehicle at a speed greater than 19 km/h (12 mph) for at least 30 seconds.
Repair or replace the suspect harness if the DTC sets.

Test Description
The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. Measure the resistance of the wheel speed sensor in order to determine if the sensor has a valid resistance value.
  2. Ensures that the wheel speed sensor is generating a valid AC voltage output.

It's the same axle, all I did was change the gears and the chunk in the rear.

I'm not 100% sure, but isn't there a speed sensor in the transmission? If so, I wonder if the gear mismatch (3.73 front/4.56 rear) would be causing it.

Or if the speedometer is off so bad that it's causing the codes to be thrown since the transmission would be staying a certain speed and the front wheel sensors are stating a different speed? Every time you shut the truck off, it clears and comes back on depending on speed and distance.

Did you adjust the gear ratio in the calibration???

If not it will do the same thing.

I haven't had it calibrated/tuned yet. I thought there would be more to the issue than that.

**The axle grenaded while completely laying frame in a mud hole and I was also thinking that the mud could be causing some issues.**

The wheel speed and RPM doesn't match what the computer thinks it should be seeing based on the old gear ratio.

Thanks for the info, I guess it's a good excuse to get a tune from BB.

Exactly as you described.

The tire size and gear ratio need to be corrected first.

The air bag is a separate issue and will need to be pulled with something capable of reading Air bag codes.

My 2wd 2000 silverado does the same thing after I swapped to 4.11's. Its caused by the rear speed sensor(in the t-case) reading faster than the front wheel speed sensors(in the hubs). Its normal until you tune it for the lower gears.
