engine swap, how hard can it be???!!!

1600 dollars for a direct fit engine swap is too mush $$$ IMO. You'd be better off doing it yourself, or finding another place where they'll charge less.
btw, I found the how to install cam link. Click here This is a cam swap on an LS1 Fbody, but the procedure is the same for the trucks. It is highly detailed info, making the do it yourself swap very simple.

like 99 blackz71 and others said
This cant be stressed enough
mine went so easy when I did the swap going by some of the same things allready posted
ziplock bags
masking tape
a sharpie
and a notepad for a checklist
label
1 and 1
2 and 2
so on and so on
when you take a bolt out with a wire on it double up the tape punch a hole in it and
run the bolt back in
now its tagged
same thing with wires ...lable both ends
use the ziplock bags to know which bolts go where
ex intake bolts, header bolts, motor mount bolts etc
check it all off in your notepad as you put it back together
I really hate to beat it to death but I feel this will make your install easier
if you know where everything goes
aint nothing like checking that last item off and knowing everything is back together
R&R should take about 2 days

I have done a write-up on Vette and F-Body removal and installations, how long will it be before you do this and I get to work on the write-up for trucks? I am currently working on the GTO right now but most owners that have them are taking them to shops. $1600 is very steep if you ask me, at least for my area. How many hours are they allowing and how much per hour?
I can do an F-bod in 4-5 hours without a lift. About the same for a vette. You could drive here, and we could do it for less than they are charging you!!!
What we all need to know;
What tools can you and your buddy have access to?
Can you rent what don't have but need?
Do you have a place to do it? A garage/shop?
I would say the tools you will need are;
Basic hand tools
Shop crane/engine hoist
With your hand tools you will need extensions, get all you can. This will make your life easier.
Also if you buy tools, btw they are a great investment, buy some decent tools. At the least I'd buy Craftsman, I would spend the money on Snap-On or MAC unless I was using them often or planning to. You can join www.eppy's.com and get S&K tools for a good price and they are very nice tools, this is what I have and I haven't had a problem yet except for a ratchet I let get wet and it rusted but they replaced it with no questions asked.
PM me and I will talk you through it if needed via phone. Also you will need the tool to disconnect the fuel lines, it's about $20 for a cheap one.
I would also buy some magnetic trays, at least 5 to hold bolts in, zip-lock bags are ok but I prefer the trays, thats just a preference though.
R&R (removal and replacement) shouldn't take more than a day, 10-12 hours, even for a first time experience with a little common sense. I will have the write up ready, I'd say sometime in March.

Here is a rough write-up for you to go by. Might want some of the others that have done it recently to proof read it. My others are on ls1tech.com. Same name in ls1 internal forums.
You'll need Pully Puller, Fuel Line Tool, Hoist, Air Hammer and basic hand tools including Hex tools.

I'll let you know if I decide to do it. I found a Z i like though....dunno if I will ghet it or wait on the new Camaro and keep what I got.
Also, overlook spelling on that thread, I was in a hurry kind-of. I am heading to bed. I just got off work.
The step by step came from GM manuals, Shop programs, my own personal experience and magazines/books. Someone may know another shortcut or 2....who knows. It shouldn't take very long, 1 day at most IMO. unless you get to drinking....lol.
