Default Keeping VVT and AFM with a cam swap?

I saw that Comp Cams now makes 3 cams that keep VVT and AFM for the K2xxx and C7 platforms. Two of them look like good truck cams while the other is mostly vette.

I was wondering what everyone thought about keeping all that stuff with a cam swap. I know the majority of people will say take it all out. I think GM has fixed the lifter problems so I'm not scared of AFM failure. I was just trying to get pros and cons before I pulled the trigger.

Thanks. The cam and lifters are only $440 and the phaser limiter kit is only about $60. Various gaskets and a tune, in my book, makes this a good affordable swap. I like being able to keep all the factory stuff and mod at the same time.

You plan on doing the work yourself? Throw head bolts or studs I. There too if you're planning on doing lifters. I think I heard of read somewhere that there is an "hd" timing set on the market for these engines as well

Yeah I will be doing this myself when I do it. I got the idea from Truckin Magazine. They did one, but didn't show any results. All they showed where the install pics.

I'd not feel comfortable leaving afm. It's designed for super soft lobes and springs... The comp cams won't be up to those standards and it will stress a system that's already suspect in most people's eyes.

Not to mention leaving afm will really limit your cam selection. I can't imagine a cam that's worth it's salt will behave well in 4cyl mode.

^^ This.

We installed the 270PIIHR17 in a customer's truck and it only picked up 15rwhp over stock at 4,000RPM+. No gain anywhere below that, and the idle had a barely noticeable lope. It's a lot more time, money, and effort to delete the DOD/AFM system, but well worth it not only for safety of the engine but also performance.

DOD/AFM lifters are garbage and have no place in a performance application. They already have very high failure rates in bone stock engines driven by soccer moms.
