What's the best cam for 6.2 with VVT Delete?
#1
Like the title says, I want to get rid of the VVT because it has become a major PITA to get a proper tune. I'm looking for the best power with stock heads and beehive springs (PAC). Mods are as in my sig and this is my daily driver ("city" driving only) with frequently visits to the local 1/8 mile track. I know that a few guys on here had done some farily large cams in the 6.2 and were running like raped apes, so it would be good to hear from them on how their trucks ran, idled, what the degree of difficulty with tuning was, etc. Thx.

OK. Thanks. That sounds interesting. Didn't know they were doing that. Been saying for years that's what someoner needs to do, and them boys at Texas Speed don't play around with making HP! Any idea what size/specs their VVT cams run?

some info here, don't know if they would do a mail order tune along with the cam.

Yea, they are pretty tight lipped on the specs.
So far I have heard of 6.2 VVT Truck cam. High teens intake duration, high 20's exhaust duration....
There is supposedly a 5.3 VVT cam out there somewhere from them. I would expect low-mid teen intake duration.
Then they have 3 levels of L99 VVT Camaro cams from low 20's intake duration to high 20's intake duration.

Thanks guys. The mailorder tune issue is the problem. I have had mailorder tunes, including a few retunes, from two of the tuners on here (with various stages of mods) and they have been decent, but I think there is only so much they can do and its a PITA to keep making logs and sending them out to get the re-tune. But I can tell you, if you ask those guys about the phaser curve, they will tell you its either not necessary or too complex to do by mailorder tune. No one here (cayman) other than me has ever done a VVT cam swap (even the technician at the local dealership gave me that deer in the headlights look when I talked to him about it) or messed with the E38 ECU, so I have quite a challenge to get help to tune it. Maybe I ought to just sit my lazy *** down and figure out what needs to be done, but I have a couple of other projects (a 5 sec race car and a race boat) along with kids, work etc, so time is really the problem. I figure that if I can get a tune that works with the same mods that I have then that would be good. But to be honest, I just don't feel that my Mast cam made the difference in power that it should (and they claim), and they were completely unhelpful with a tune, so I feel like yanking that out (along with my ever-slipping PT3200 convertor) and throwing it in the bin, right about now...
But, if I do buy another cam, it will have to come with a tune and a guarantee! Maybe I will give Texas Speed a call tomorrow and see what they say.
Thanks again for your help, and sorry about the diatribe!

Does yours feel stronger on top or bottom after the cam? I still haven't put my comp VVT cam in. I'm not convinved they have the phasers figured out. I emailed them, and got a different answer to which phaser is correct than is in the bulletin.

You have to look at the Part Number on the phaser. Then, there is no guess work. This is the only way to make sure you are getting the right kit.
