Running on 4 cylinders

Running on 4 cylinders
Something funny: I unhooked one side of my coil packs this weekend and removed the valve cover so I could check the torque specs on my rocker bolts. I buttoned it all up and fired it up. I immediately knew I had forgot to hook up the coil pack when it turned over. But with the electric throttle control on my 03, it continued to crank and got itself running. About 2 seconds of this and I turned it off. I couldn't believe it ran, although it sounded like a molested Yugo.
I'll just consider the experience as a prep for GMs upcoming displacement on demand system.

what's up with the 03 up trucks starting themselves? i noticed that when i first drove the 03 yukon...just barely turn the key and then let it go and it starts itself....where in my silverado you have to hold it. i guess it has something to do with the FBW???

I read a tech bulletin about that.
It goes into a 'no start mode', or something similar, and continues for 4 seconds to attempt to start. After the 4 seconds is up, it will shut the starter off. It's kinda wierd if you aren't expecting it. It's really freaky when you do a **** load of work and you just bump the starter, let off the key and it's still cranking.
Anyways ... they called it a feature .. just like that BS speed limiter that starts cutting back at 95 and then cuts off when it hits 100.

I'm glad no one was around to hear it. Very weak start on 4 cyls. Neighbors would have been thinking "He's screwed it up again".
Yep, when you hit the ignition, it will take over throttle and continue to crank until it catches. When I installed my nitrous, I had no fuel pressure in the line. As I went to start it the first time (I didn't five the fuel system time to pressureize the lines), it took off cranking on it own working the throttle and everything until it started. It did suprise me the first time.
I wonder what the crank time limit is? If you are out of gas, will it just crank for 5 seconds, 8, 10, more? *** EDIT *** Flyer just posted 4 seconds for the starter crank time.

my 01 will crank on only 4 cylinders also , and yes it does sound like you have screwed something up.
but wouldn't that be like having a couple of plugwires unhook? and running it then.
btw big tex did you just let your coil packs hang off to the side or is there another way to do this. I check my 1.85 rockers everyonce and awhile and letting them hang or rigging up some zipties to hold it up was the only way i found to do it.
