Just bought this truck last night. The light behind the odo and gear selector is out. I'm thinking of just replacing the cluster as it seems this is a common issue.
Another thing, the actual gear selector lever seems loose, and when I put it in park it doesn't un-lock the doors like it's supposed to. Any ideas on this one guys? I'm guessing there is some sort of switch at the gear lever, not really for sure.
Any help would be great.

should be the linkage, try adjusting it, its just inside (underneath) the driver's door. Also in 99 I dont believe putting it in park unlocks them. My 00 never did that, just lock at ~20mph

Ya the selector is just real jiggly I guess is the work im looking for lol. Even when in gear and driving it's just loose I guess. I'll check underneath the truck to see if I can see anything.
Thanks alot, so is the gauge cluster light deal pretty common with my year model?

My 99 does not unlock the doors when you put it in park, nor can you control the auto head lights with the rear bed light button. that came in teh later models. I th nk it does lock when i drive 20+mph as well

Yea, 99 was the bastard year lol, as mentioned, the doors lock when you hit 20ish, but you have to unlock them yourself. I've heard of the loose shifter handle before too, but can't remember what the remedy was, maybe AKlowriderZ71, TorqueWrench, or one of the other GM dealership gents can chime in with some info on that. I replaced my instrument cluster with a Denali cluster from JPCustoms before any of my original bulbs had a chance to burn out. I solved the auto on headlight dilemma with a resistor jumped across the ambient light sensor, my headlights are now fully manual only. I lost the auto feature, but pretty much know when it's too dark to see and I need my headlights lol.

Well the only thing that really bothers me right now is the gauge cluster. I checked all fuses yesterday just to be sure and they were all fine. Looks like I'll just have to fine a cluster somewhere.
