I think that the Volant with the down pipe is great for suckin them cold microns in yur motah. But its friggin Bling. very spensive. Yeah the open boxes work but I think that the Volant looks sweet, and pulls more ponies. I'll be open my wallet to one soon, I'll let ya know how well it works.

P.S. Will this mod void my warranty? Does N E 1 no?

check out this painted Volant :

As far as the ram air goes, you'd think it would really help the intake temps with an open element, because it would push all the air up and out of that area, might help with an open box. Might even help with closed box who knows.

I know my underhood temps sky rocketed after the header install (uncoated stainless), so a closed box is probably my best bet. Might be switching to some coated asm's tho.

03GMC can you get us a better pic of your engine please. Looks great. love the painted details. Did the Volant perform for the cash?
P.S. How did you do the drop? I want to do a 2/4 but I don't want to lose turning radius, camber, or have a lot or wear on my joints in the front( just shackels and hanger in rear) will it bottom out for everday driving?
I know a lot of questions but does N E 1 know?

sorry I should have specified that painted engine bay is from gmfullsize.com 's featured truck - I wish mine looked that good haha

I used 2" coils and leafs and shackles for the 4" rear drop. Didnt lose much if any turning radius, camber (just get it aligned afterward), no excessive wear or anything....this is my daily driver. 2-4 is about as mild of a drop as it gets, perfectly fine for daily driving. I'd recommend Hotchkis or belltech springs and coils for the drop. I have cheap Doetsch tech stuff. And keep your stock shocks unless you want a harsh ride. Probably sell my Edelbrock 2-4 shocks here pretty soon.

When I hear how much air the thing sucks in when you give it some throttle, I can't help but think that the 5.3 was starved for air when trying to get o2 through the 2 little holes inthe fender...by the way, where eactly are those 2 hole supposed to be getting air from??? Haven't had time to check around yet, BUT, it seems like a weak set up to me...Gotta love the open element for WOT response..."hot air" or not...

The open element is ok at the track when you pull the headlight out, and get good cold air pushed in. Just around town i think they suck. Thats ok, i have plenty of the cooling spray to over come that when needed.

This argument will never really be solved will it??? I still have yet to see consistant conclusions on any of these "cold air", open element, plastic -vs- metal tube, smooth tube -vs- stock baffled tube, etc...That's why I couldn't see spending more than $50 on my intake, it was either this or a K&N drop in...I went with this set up to compliment my ram air hood that I plan on getting next month...it dumps air right on top of that open element...
