May have to look deeper into this option. Actually NakedAV was telling me to check out new LQ4 crates as well. UH OH you two agreed on something. J/K

I'm sure we agree on more than we disagree on.

But actually, I was directing you toward the LQ9 crate motor.

i would personally stick with a lq4. you ahould be able to more boost out of the lq4 vs. the lq9 due to the compression differences.

This is where the disagreements start. I don't understand the compression thing but it seems as if the compression is already a little higher (LQ9) I would have to force less air in to it to get the same boost levels. Less work for the blower, same boost. Right/Wrong?

i am just goin off of what i have read on here. people say that with the lq9 you can't get the same boost out of it. i am not going off of personal expierence just what i have read.

The LQ9 will make slightly more hp than a LQ4 because of it's higher compression, but your tuning will be more critical to avoid detonation and a repeat of your broken piston.Neither stock motor has pistons strong enough withstand detonation so tuning is very important. The LQ4 will be more forgiving.

That is correct, which is why the stock pulley for an LQ9 is 3.3", while the stock pulley for the LQ4 is 3.1". You need more pulley on an LQ4 to make the same boost.

actually that is incorrect, number one it is not close to the limit on a 360 ci motor....but this is an age old argument that is sure to continue for years to come!

Second, the stock pulley for the LQ9 is a 3.3, this is correct. This is due to the fact that the higher compression ratio vs pump gas does not work very well on the street.....a LQ4 and an LQ9 are both 360 or so CI, so the reason behind the different pulley size is fuel limits, not needing a smaller pulley to make the same boost...That being said, the LQ4 makes about 6-6.5 psi and the LQ9 is about 5-5.5 psi.....

a friend of mine bounced a lifter off of the cam hard enough to gouge the wheel and cam in his '01 5.3 Z71. instead of rebuilding the old we went with the gm crate LQ9 crate. it came just as below minus engine covers, ac, alternator and belt. even came filled with mobile 1 5w-30. had to swap TBs since this came with an ETC version, along with his return-style fuel rail and regulator. runs great. he has 36" swampers and 4.56s with detroit lockers and can boil them down from a dig.
