I've got an old 72 blazer 350 that i'm customizing myself, i've got welding and fabrication experience, so i'm looking at doing my own exhaust.
i've heard lots of good things about an x-pipe, but my truck's a 4x4 so there isn't much room when trying to get the X close to the headers, without sacrificing groud clearance.
i know there are so many variables, but i think it'll be similar to what Grip just got. it's old, so there's no need for cats. i'm still trying to decide if i should go with a pro-dump, or try to fit 3 or 4 tight bends, to stay above the leafs, and exit thru the body in front of the rear wheels. but then i'd need some real tight radius 2.5" SS bent pipe

my question is: how much does it matter that the X is more than half way down the total legenth of the exhaust system?

Im no expert but it would make sense to me to put it no more than half way. The x pipe helps scavenge and the faster the exhaust gas is flowing through it the better it will scavenge. Ex gas slows down as it gets farther from the engine so the closer the x is to half or less the dist the better it will scavenge from the engine.

I installed mine right in front of the mufflers.

 

optimal is as close to the collector as possible, the farther away the x-pipe is located the less benefit you will see.

 

This only works if you have an existing exaust system. I have heard from a few people that if you spray some paint on the pipes then get it hot, where the paint stops melting is where to put the x or h pipe. just sompthing ive heard never tried it.

 

yep.... thats what i was told, but my exaust guy kind of put mine were he wanted it. I wonder if I moved mine back closer to the front if it would make my exaust back louder. Right now with it placed right in front of the mufflers it quited my exaust a good bit.
