I don't guess you know the VIN? Do you have posession of the motor?

Pull a spark plug - dished piston=LQ4, flat top=LQ9

That would be the sure fire way to know.

One thought - an external engine clue might be the alternator. The 03-04 SSS's came with 105A alts. I suspect the VHO or Tx Truck verison also has the 105A alt. I think most of the HD LQ4 engines will probably have a higher output alternator (130A or 145A). Can anybody verify what is stock on the Escalade? Of course, it is easy to swap out an alternator.

Are there serial numbers on the engine somewhere that you could take to a dealer and have them look it up?

Yup, its a LQ4. I used a flexable tip craftsman flashlight through a sparkplug hole.
