The speed your running in the quarter kinda makes it hard to maximize your trap rpm in 2nd or 3rd gear with current tire choices and rpm limits.

If you run a 28*10*16 slick with 3.42 gears you'd have to lock the converter at the end of the track and would still be turning over 6000rpm.

If you stay with your street tires you could hold second without locking the converter but, you don't hook on those and if you ever wanted to go faster you wouldn't be optimized anymore.

I'm thinking you should just go with a dedicated sticky tire at the track and maybe even step up to a 4.10+ gear. I think that setup would love a 100 or so shot of N20.

I think you should get a little bigger stall converter also if you go to a sticky tire. Stall for the 60' and gear for finish line rpm.

Buy a set of Drag TAs 255/50/16 do a good burnout and flash the convertor at the starting line. That will do wonders for your 60ft times and the 26" diameter will eliminate the flat spot at the 2nd to 3rd shift. You will also see a low 14 sec ET.

With my 4.10s I did not lose any mph in the quarter but I gained about 4 tenths.

The 3.42 gear does shift out of second past the 1/4 mile or about 95mph and you only are down in your revs twice, but if they don't catch me by 85 mph it's adios to 128.I like my 4.10 & auburn pro.Jim

Default 3.42 gears, better for the 1/4??

Are 3.42 gears better for the quarter than my 3.73's. I've seen a lot of posts where truck with 3.42's run pretty quick times because they can hold 2nd gear through the 1/4 mile. There is no way I can hold 2nd with my 3.73's, even when I max out the shifts with my HPP, the truck shifts into 3rd long before I reach the finish. With tire spin starting to be a problem, would it be better to gear up to 3.42's? I can't stall fully with the Yank because of tire spin with my 3.73's, I still have to milk it off the line. Would 3.42's allow me to stall higher and get less tire spin or would that actually be detrimental to performance?

Jim you really need sticky tires if your spinning. Sure you don't get alot of tirespin with 3.42's but...it really hits that dead lowend spot our motors have(maybe a little different for you since you have a convertor) and won't 60 foot all that great. I would really like to get steeper gearing(3.73, 4.10) myself.

What size tires do you run at the track?

I still think it would be better to hold 2nd to the end of the quarter if the overall gear ratio allows it.

If the overall ratio doesn't allow for it within the rpm limit then get a lower gear and stickier tires.

I know they're not a REAL good tire but the sales guy said they were a good replacement tire for the stock Generals I had. I didn't tell him I needed a super sticky tire to hook up at the track. Maybe I should get a couple of used rims and buy two good tires or ET's just to run at the track.

Maybe its differnt for you because of your mods but...

Me and my hommie have basically the same truck with the same mods, I have 3.42, he has 3.73's

When we were racing he would alwayz get a little jump on me and I would come back once he shifted into 3nd and I was still pulling 2nd... but I think thats because he didnt have his shift points up all the way.

I want some 4.10's
