The wire that runs down the shifter into the steering column could have broken. Pretty common problem.

The wires are too small of stranded copper for repair. They break again quickly right next to your repair. Often the wires break right where they come out of the shifter handle.

To check where they broke, pull the column shift boot out of the clamshell, and look around. You might also pull the bottom half of the clamshell to look up there. The 2 wires are white, in an orange sleeve, IIRC. The harness is serviced by replacing the shifter handle, around $85-90, very easy to replace, and the connector is on the left side of the column.

I repaired mine 2 weeks ago. It's an orange wire like stated above. The wire is help down with plastics clips. Mine was broke at the first plastic clip right out of the shifter handle. I removed an discarded the plastic clips and re-soldered the connection.
