Default Rear gear swap in a 4X4, do I change the front as well.

I wan't to put 4.10's in my 06' ECSB Silverado 1500 Z71. A buddy of mine said I would have to change the front gears to match if I want to ever use my 4wd. I have 3.42's currently in the back and I don't know what up front. What do I really have to do? This is my first truck so I am lost with the 4wd stuff. It won't be cost effective if I have to change the front and rear gears.

Thanks guys.

Yes, the front and rear gears must be the same, so you will have to replace the fronts as well

Well, that sucks. Thanks for the info. You just saved me a bunch of money. I will just use that money to build a bigger motor.

no, you do not have to do the front. Just remove the front D-shaft so you dont accidently put it in 4wd.

yeah you can remove the front driveshaft and you wont have to. But I hate having a 4x4 with no 4x4 capabilities.

I thought all 4x4's had some sort of G80-posi in them?

Mine has 4.56s in the rear and 3.73s in the front with the driveshaft in. It is just temporary though. Only thing it will make it do is turn the ABS and BRAKE like on.

that would be sweet to have if you could disengage the rear driveshaft.. and then you could have highway gears in front and towing/racing gears out back.. and swap between them
