4L80e swap. It's the only way to go.

4L80e, the 60e just won't take the abuse.

I'm one of the few that are making power with out an 80.

locally built 4L70E with numbers in my sig.

THE TUNE IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS THE TRANSMISSION IT SELF

It depends on the power that you are making really. a 4l60 can be built to handle 800 hp but thats in a 3k lb car. Put that transmission in a truck that weighs 5k + and only makes 500 hp and it goes to crap real fast. Even at 500+ to the tire in a heavy application its on borrowed time. Smaller diameter converter has to be used also. Stock size converter will kill a 60e with some good power.

People are money ahead in the long run just doing a Proper 4l80e combo from the get go. That is why everyone just says do the swap. They are saving you the time, gief and $.

489rwhp capabilities are most definitely attainable with a 4L6XE series transmission, and even more so with a 70E (better base to start with). Even with the weight, I wouldn't have much of a worry, and this is coming from someone who dislikes 4L60Es for most applications. I honestly don't think that would be enough of an example to prove a point in attempting a 4L6XE rebuild, no offense. If it was holding upper 600's or more to the wheel at that weight, that would impress me.

A very lightly built 4L80E can just handle so much more than a 60E period. With a 4L80E, most of you would be more than fine with every single stock hard part. It would be the soft parts (clutches, steels, seals, filters, gaskets, electronics) and the hydraulic modifications that would really make the difference. Nitrous guys need billet parts (input shaft and forward hub), and guys shooting past the 800hp should consider it, but with the 60Es and 70Es, there are a LOT of hard parts that need to be changed out and it gets more costly for hard parts alone than an entire 4L80E rebuild kit down to the pan gasket and filter.

^^ i agree 100% but a lot of us are just looking for a daily truck w some ***** and I really believe and prove it every day that the 60s/70s can handle it when built and tuned correctly.

Guys with a starting goal of 600 wheel should really be looking for an 80 to begin with.

The more I read about guys blowing theirs 60s/70s up with mid 300 wheel, and blowing up level X/stage X from transmission shops with 400-500 hp really worries me. I think something mechanically with the Transmissions could be improved or the tune was that far off.

I had mine taken apart for inspection after one year of abuse at about 450 wheel and it was flawless. The fluid was fine, the bands and clutches all had barely any wear... my builder said I wasted my money having him do it. But I did it to make sure it was ok. Now I'm not so worried about it. I do not hesitate to launch in 4 wheel drive and do WOT pulls every day =]
