Default Turbo Potential

I'm fairly new to turbos. I know how they work, how to install them. More than the average joe but not enough to trust myself. I'm shooting for 660 rwhp. I know it's a tough number to reach but I have a good start to work with.

If you read my introduction thread you'll understand further. But as for this thread ill try to keep it simple. I currently have a 414ci 6.0 built. Forged pistons, hardened pushrods, bigger injectors, cam. You know generally everything I need that I'm aware of. As I said I'm looking for 660 rwhp. I'm aware that its a random number and while it may seem stupid or pointless, it's what I want. Please no hate but as much criticism as possible will be welcomed. It's why I'm here. I need it.

You know the number I'm looking for. What I'm working with.

I have a 2004 z06 engine sitting in the shed, I have a 5.3 in my truck. Just in case I need parts from either to help me reach my goal. I have a set of machined 317 heads on the engine as of right now but I'm not sure if the stock heads can help me reach that number.

All my friends are import owners so they're not much help. They're suggesting 50mm turbos, just no. A few of my questions would be would a 76mm turbo take too long to spool? I was looking at Garret or Turbonetics, but I'm open for change. If I need to get different heads, I can. Also some have told me to get a 150 dry shot, which id like to steer clear of but I will consider it. is 660 rwhp possible from here with a reasonable sized turbo? What size and what heads would I need to switch to?

I'm open to all opinions and suggestions. Thanks!

Take a look at the Borg Warner S400 76mm. They are bad-*** (support up to 1220hp with a cast wheel) and inexpensive (link:Borg Warner & TurboDriven) If you size the turbine housing right there is no need to worry about spool or needing to add nitrous. My Garrett (with a 1.18 a/r) goes from vacuum to 10psi in less than a second. Your 660rwhp goal is certainly within reach...with stock LS heads. There are plenty of folks making much more than that on stock heads.

Figure this: n/a horsepower * (1 + boost/atmosphere) = boosted hp (rough est. there are other factors such as heat, restrictions, etc as you go up on boost...but you get the idea)

So if you start with something healthy say 400rwhp and 10psi you get:
400rwhp * (1 + 10/14.7) = 672rwhp

With a decent converter you'll be at full boost so fast your concern will not be lag - but traction! Good luck with the build...you won't regret going turbo!

Hot damn, best answer I've gotten from even speed shops and it only took one post. I love this site lol Thanks man! Where I live everyone just uses nitrous with no build. I'm going to get my tune from National Speed in Wilmington, NC. If anyone has done any work with them I'd love to hear your experiences with them. Turbo definitely looks promising. Ill do some research on the BW turbo you suggested.

Id do a t6 garrett gt91. The 475 on my 364 spools like yesterday, on a bone *** stock converter. If i knew this beforehand i would have went bigger.

We all say we want this much power, next thing you know you want more. Id just prefer to get straight to the point, saves time and money changing stuff in the future.

You can make that power with the 5.3 that's in the truck right now. Im making that power with a 5.3 and a 80mm turbo at only 14psi. If you run that 414 CI go with a gt91 and you will make that power at 4-5 psi. At 15 psi you would be knocking on 1000 rwhp

I have a turbo setup that I might be getting rid of soon. It's a Borg Warner s400 76mm / 87-81mm turbine with a 1.10 ar from works turbochargers. Would make your power goal easy and spool fast!
