Default Engine Oil with Turbo

Out of curiosity, is there a need to use a special/different oil with an oil-cooled turbo? I've mostly used Valvoline 10W-30 or 40. I have also used Valvoline Max Life, Mobil 1 Clean 5000, Castrol 5W-30... pretty much whatever is on sale. I think they have all be conventional however.

While my truck is not turbo'd right now, I need to change the oil this month and it will be turbo'd before the following oil change. The plan is a KB intercooled kit with a MP70 to start, upping to a 76mm probably soon.

Should I consider using another kind/weight of oil? Would be be bad to change to synthetic now? It has 101k miles on it. Front main seal was changed 10k miles ago, rear main seal will be changed in a couple weeks. Original pan gasket. No oil leaks to speak of right now.

Thanks!

I'd go ahead and switch to synthetic. Just check your oil more often for the first couple thousand miles to be sure it's not going though more oil than usual, if it uses any as of now at all.

You should really run a racing type oil due to the heat produced from a turbo. Brad Penn or Valvoline VR1 are good choices. Basically something with a lot of zinc in it.

I would run at least a synthetic. My turbo is off of a throttleless diesel so it doesnt like a ton of oil pressure. Which my bbc makes. They do make a lighter weight diesel oil.

I run rotella 5-40 synthetic. It's made for turbo engines and high heat.
