Straps keep the front suspension for unloading when accelerating, it limits how far the springs can push up the front of the car. Keeping the front end down helps with traction.

I just blew up my 226k mile 5.3, would have lived just fine with better tuning, 1650 egt on 19 lbs of boost will lead to some detonation apparently
I wouldn't even think twice about turboing a high mile LS, and before bothering to rebuild one just go shopping at the junkyard, they are like cordwood now... My next motor will be delivered for under 400. I'll just keep a better eye on afr next time, maybe.

Another question, if I were to turbo a high mileage truck and a cam, would it be absolutely necessary to change the springs and lifters too if I planned on 1)only 5psi of boost 2)didn't rev the crap out of it and 3)was only going to drive it for a year or so. I ask because i plan on building another 4.8 on a stand with all the goodies to minimize downtime...
