Default 164,000 mile 4.8 with turbo?

Hey guys, I was wondering how many miles would be too high to add a turbo. Im torn between spending the money on a low mileage 00-06 sierra/silverado or a high mileage truck for a turbo. If i got the high mileage truck, I'd do the turbo and plan to do a complete rebuild in a year or 2 down the road. I just found a truck for a good price with 164,000 miles, and assuming that everything was sound on the engine, what would you think about adding a turbo?

Also originally planned on getting a 2wd and lowering it 4/6, but now I'm toying with getting a 4wd and lowering it. Temptations....any opinions/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I say go for it. If it blows junkyard engines can be had for under $500.

Yea thats kind of how I was leanining too. I think a turbo, lowered 4wd would be great, but its more weight, more moving parts, more money, more issues lol.

And just a question out of curiosity, does anyone know how much boost a stock 4.8 can take before detonation occurs on 91-93 pump gas and without using meth. I know its affected by the cam, and IATs, and a bunch of other factors, but I was just kind of curious what the typical limit was for boost in a stock 4.8. THANKS

Do it !

The original 5.3 in my truck had 183 k on it , the lifters took a dump when I cammed it, but it ran great and still had factory cross hatching on the cylinder walls !

So my advice is change the lifters if you put a cam in a high mileage engine , other than that you should be good , and like said you can find engines for around 500$ .

He'll my LQ4 van has 230k and runs awesome!

Sure: more weight, more moving parts, and more money.

You forget the most important thing-MORE TRACTION!

SLCviaAK, I hear ya. Just not sure if that pros outweigh the cons for what i intend to use the vehicle for. Thanks for the input, its tough deciding 4wd or 2wd lol

The only way to hook on the street is the 4wd button, period. Besides GM 4ws parts seem to hold great under power.

The only drawback is weight as stated.
