Default Do my dyno numbers sound weak?

Before I start tuning with my new HP Tuners, I have my dyno numbers from Doug Rippie Motorsports. Doug tuned my PCM with LS1 edit and this was done on a Dynpjet dynomometer. I feel like I got ripped because he wouldn't push the timing any harder. We weren't seeing any KR and I've posted his timing table here... (tuners please see attached zip file). So anyways, my mods are 100% stock other than the fact I have a 2001 Z06 cam and springs along with a silverado SS catback that I had installed. The truck has 3.73 gears and has a 5 speed. My peak numbers are: 230 HP from 5000-5400 RPMs HP is completely flat and the Peak torque numbers are 240 ft lbs from 3800-5000 RPM's with a 5 ft lb deveation at most. The weather that day when we dyno'd was 72.9 deg and baro pressure was 28.74. I thought some other guys were pulling better numbers off their "stock" motors than this and here I am pulling numbers like this with a Z06 cam and dyno tune from DRM (which I'm not crazy about).

Please advise,

Joe

seems a little low, here is my dyno graph from my last motor dyno for reference (GM Hotcam, 219/228 .525 .525 112):

What kind of truck? RCSB? 2wd? Trans? Gears? Tire height? Anything else done to your 4.8 other than cam swap?? Am I doing quite a bit better than stock do you think? Anyone have good stock dyno tune where everything is 100% stock other than tune??

Thanks,

Joe

RCSB, 2wd, 4l60e w/tci 3000 stall, 4.10s, 285/60/17 (~30"). Other than the cam, just longtubes, full true dual exhaust, and a tune.

hirdlej,

yeah that definitely sounds weak. any reason the tuner wasn't getting aggressive on tuning? perhaps detonation concerns?

He said "LS1 motors don't like more than 29 deg of timing max, anything more and it's not worth trying to squeeze the extra HP out of it" I was like WTF dude?! I've built a few motors in my day and the last time I checked is we just kept adding more timing until we saw some pre-ignition and then backed off. This just totally baffled me on how he tuned this thing. And this is supposed to be the world renowned Doug Rippie?? Mr. Corvette himself? The guy is a jerk and made me feel like I was wasting his time. What would you guys start looking at in my tune if this thing is putting out numbers this low? Do you think it's a timing issue? Something else? The AFR is dialed in anywhere from 12.9-13.1 under WOT. That being said, I think I'll leave the VE tables alone, however I think I should just keep adding timing and logging until I see KR to get the most aggressive table possible. Does this make sense? Also, I'm running the stock steel 16" wheels with heavy Michelin LTX M/S tires on it. Would that make a 10RWHP difference or not?

Thanks,

Joe

my 01's stock numbers were 220/230 i beleive...

dont worry about it... lets just hope you didnt pay good ole Rippie that much cash for what he did. I would just keep building this sucker and one day you'll come across someone that you really enjoy talking to and actually have fun tuning with. And ya.. 29 max is bs... your exactly right, lol keep going up untill you pre-ignite... sounds good to me

I won't be able to try my "modified" Doug Rippie tune 'til this spring since my truck is in storage I am just going to keep increasing timing more and more until I either hear spark knock or the PCM detects it. His tune is BS. ABout the only thing he dialed in right was the AFR. He couldn't even figure out how to remove my rev limiter! The first thing I saw when getting my HPT is that the electronic throttle control MAX was set to only 5600 RPM's........ Argh, sloppy worksmanship upsets me! I think I'm going to go into business for myself when I get this tuning thing down. Do street tunes locally for all '03 and '04 silverado's for $200 a crack...... Anything has to be better than this rippie tune!

Im not a fan of Doug Rippies tunes but he does have a point that most near stock LS1s(even yours with the very mild 01 Z06 cam) dont see too much of a power gain running more than 30 degrees of timing. There is no point in running 32 or 36 degrees of timing if it makes as much power as 29 or 30 degrees. Plus it gives you that extra buffer incase you get some bad gas.

WTF indeed. Sounds like one of those "LS1's need a certain amount of backpressure to run properly" kind of guys.
