A friend asked me last night, will a 6.0 (lq-4 ?) be a plug in replacement for his 4.8 truck ? I told him I thought it would bolt in and plug up ( keep the 4.8 fly wheel ) but he would need to tune for the displacement and injector size.
I haven't changed a tune in anything for 8yrs. I'm sure a lot has changed. Am I correct ? What manufactures offer A hand held with appropriate tune?
I think he's looking for torgue not high performance.

 

yes 4.8 to a 6.0 will be a direct swap. first off ditch the handheld there are plenty of sponcers on this site to tune for a 6.0 (look them up on the left). also 4.8,5.3,6.0 all have the same 24lbs injectors. good luck with the build

 

The actuall tune is different. as in some of the operating perameters. You will need some one to do a custom tune. Like black bear.

 

Thanks for the input guys. I thought a handheld might be better for him because he can't do without the truck long enough to send out his pcm.
That's a bit worrysome anyway, no honey you can't use the truck this week the brain is gone, maybe next week or the one after.

 

also unless you change everthing point less things that messure things over such as maf sensor and other things that make your truck run smooth! you will run in to MANY MANY PROBLEMS !the best choice is to get a mail order tune by one of our sponsers! know when you order a mail order tune most of the time they send you a tunned pcm for all your up grades and you send back you stock pcm as core! its cheaper and more a efficient just to order a mail order tune! help your self and ur buddy and order 1! i personally recomend black bear performance but there weatly tunes and nelson tunes!

He didnt mention the year of the truck or the year that the LQ4 would come from or if he even had the PCm from it. 99-02 and 03-up PCMs are different.


But yes if he were able to get one from a similar year he could try that. Vats might not let it start though if the Vins dont match. Some times they work and some time the wont.

 

a budy of mine that did a swap to a 6.0 from a 4.8L did that just swapped the pcm and he changed hid maf sensor a time a two and obdII sensors and all he needed was a tune ! apperently the flow numbers in intake increase and although you change the pcm the maf sensor does not recognize the change and starts acting up ! but hey iam no expert dont take my word ! i'm juyst trying to help a bit! good luck!

Its not the intake #'s Its the cylinder volume. On my 5.3 the number is 40 on the same year 6.0 the cylinder volume number is like 45 That makes a diffrenence when it calculates fuel needed

 

Yes a tune will be needed. Just have your tuner upgrade a lq4 operating system for a starting point and then go from there.
