Hand held scanners?

What is the best code scanner to buy? Looking in the price range up to $500. Looking to start to do little side jobs and such so it would have to be able to scan most brand of cars.

If your willing to spend up to $500, look into a higher model that will read things like ABS codes. Like this one.

I had one of the first models from that company and they have come along way. recently I have been looking into AutoXray Brand there newest one has biderectional capabilities.

The reason I mentioned the ABS codes is because we had a car in the shop today and none of the scan tools would read the ABS codes. I had to go home at lunch and grab my Tech 2.
Also make sure what ever you are going to buy is updateable. The first equus scanner I bought was not updateable. at the time CAN protocal was not introduced. So that makes that scanner pretty worthless now. These newer ones are updateable and some can even be expanded with different cables and software upgrades.

probally not. may be able to read obd2 codes but not sure if you will be able to see live sensor data. Not sure if they support all CAN protocalls either.... their are 4 or 5 obd2 protocalls and I believe 4 CAN protocalls. The Newer Hondas and Volvos are using a high speed Can protocall.
