Default GM bankrupt close 12 plants / obama 30 billion bail out for gm

General Motors to close or idle 12 more plants

06/01/2009 9:48:04 AM

By KIMBERLY S. JOHNSON AP Auto Writer
General Motors Corp. said Monday it will permanently close nine more plants and idle three others to trim production and labor costs under bankruptcy protection.
The closures will displace 18,000 to 20,000 GM employees, the company said.
Six of the plants are in GM's home state of Michigan, which has already been hard-hit by job cuts in the auto industry.
GM's assembly plant in Wilmington, Del., will close in July, followed by its Pontiac, Mich., pickup truck plant in October.
Assembly plants in Spring Hill, Tenn., and Orion, Mich., will end production this fall but remain on "standby," meaning workers can be called back should the company need to increase production. One of those plants would be retooled to produce a subcompact vehicle that GM had originally planned to build in China.
The closings will bring GM's U.S. factory count from to 34 by the end of 2010, compared to 47 at the end of 2008. The company will shutter an additional plant by the end of 2012.

Obama's plan to save GM: bankruptcy, $30 billion

06/01/2009 10:19:32 AM

By DAVID ESPO AP Special Correspondent
President Barack Obama pushed a humbled General Motors Corp. into bankruptcy on Monday and said the federal government will act as "reluctant shareholder" when it assumes a 60 percent ownership of the smaller carmaker that emerges.
The president said he hopes GM _ once a proud symbol of American capitalism _ would emerge quickly from bankruptcy court, and pledged up to $30 billion in additional federal assistance to help it get on its feet.

Call me an *******, but let GM tank, when one company goes down it gives other companies a chance. If a business is run poorly, or cant adjust to changing times then it needs to be let go. No one is going to bail my *** out if I lose my job

I think they should make only one damn brand instead of a GMC sierra and a Chevy silverado.....tell me how that is cost effective?

But yeah Chevy making trucks, vette's, camaro's and some suv's would be cool. But for a good product mix, they need to make one small economy car and then something like the malibu or impala.

For those counting, that's 2 butts. I agree no one w/ help you. A lot of bashing going on for a company whose trucks y'all drive. I agree, yes GM might not be runnin it smoothly. But not that it needs to go.

As far as having a GMC branded truck & a Chevy, well if $ is being spent on the other brand to advertise, well, I don't think that would make sense at this time. Would it be better to use 1 brand of GM truck & just change the brand so they still appear as 2 different looks as they do now? I don't think that makes a diff either.

Consider, that for every UAW auto job, it creates 8 or 9 other jobs. Advertising, a supplier, etc. I think to let America's auto industry, not just GM's, fail is a losing proposition. Those people have families & homes. Yes, I know people have lost jobs in all walks of life. I just think the U.S. auto industry is/ were/ icons.

You can't tell me u don't know a friend or family member, or somehow have someone u know that worked for the U.S. auto co.'s at some point & time. They probably put a roof over some heads.

Did the U.S. auto industry as a whole screw up back yrs. ago( I mean the 70's or whatever yr you fill it in) when the foreign nameplates came here? Yes.
They have improved their quality. I sure as **** don't wanna be driving some made in China or Korea P.O.S. today or tomorrow cause we just let it go down!

Here's the deal. The U.S. auto industry is facing the same as the U.S. economy as a whole, being reactive instead of proactive has creating this mess yrs. ago. When quality started slipping, take the steps. It's always, "OH ****, Now Look What Happened". Learn from mistakes & improve. It should be that way in all walks of life.

It's not. But while I don't understand why, I don't get as pissed about that as payin some jerkoff CEO or CFO billions when the common man gets the shaft. And no, I don't work for the auto ind.
