The XD put through the Glock Torture Test

20,000 total rounds through it with minimal cleaning, started the torture test after 17,500 rounds were ran through it. Froze it, buried it in dirt/ash/dust, put it in mud, submerged it in water, and degreased the gun of all lubrication oil. It had ZERO problems, no jamming, no nothing.
For one, they need to lose the stupid grip safety. None of my carry handguns have external safety's. Just more stuff to go wrong.

Once the XD has been around for 20 years, then you can compare it to a Glock. Until then, we'll have to see how it pans out. Same goes for my S&W M&P 45c.

The XD (hs2000) has been around since 1999, so almost 12 years now. If the product works, which is does and has for a long time now, what's the problem? There are thousands of happy XD owners around the world, with very little complaints. Your argument makes no sense. Also, the grip safety isn't "Stupid", the 1911 uses it as well. I'm guessing that is a stupid gun as well?

Springfield is one of the few handgun mfg's that make a firearm for legal sale in CA. CA handgun regs are crazy and I believe that grip safety is integral to their sales here. Many fine quality handguns and long guns are not legal for sale (new) in CA while the rest of the country gets to enjoy them. Mfg's are required to include numerous safety devices to comply with state laws. Many don't give a damn that law abiding citizens in CA want to enjoy ownership and they don't bother. Colt for one iirc can't be bought new here. Can you imagine? OK enough about CA but you can understand why that grip safety is there now...

Is this turning into yet another online glock vs xd fight? I'm gonna put this out there real quick then, I'm:
XD > Glock
AR > AK (though, my new ak is warming a place in my heart)
.308 > 5.56
Pie > Cake

As far as ammo to shoot out of it goes- cheap. Buy cheap stuff for the range. The walmart value packs are pretty good for the price, and if you buy online you'll save even more money. Most ammo websites today have reviews or ratings on how good the ammo performs. Buy alright stuff, but don't spend all your money on range ammo.

Self defense rounds... I agree as it was said before, shot placement is critical, but if your house has walls, a well placed shot with a FMJ .40 will likely overpenetrate a body and continue through sheetrock. Reliable expansion is also critical with self defense stuff. I'm not going to recommend you anything in particular, every other month another new one comes out that's better than anything out there, but I will tell you that for self defense my .45's will eat Hydrashoks. I've shot more of them than anthing else so I'm familiar with how they handle out of my handguns. Oh, and get "+P" stuff when your buying self defense ammo.

It should work, they did a good job copying Glock's design.

For the purposes of concealed carry (the main reason to own a polymer firearm in my opinion) there should be no external safetys. So to me, yes, it is stupid. Murphy's law - anything can and will go wrong. I am just trying to minimize that possibility.

I never said anything about the 1911, I like them at the range and that's about it. We're talking about completely different firearms and intended purposes when you compare a 1911 and polymer pistol. I would not carry one (1911) myself, although I know many people do and with success.

If you don't want the gun to discharge, keep your greasy finger outside of the trigger guard.

Bill,

Yes, California gun laws are ridiculous. However, the citizens of that state have a vote, and furthermore, if you don't like the laws, move somewhere else. Do that and come enjoy the right to bear arms just like the citizens of nearly every other reasonable state.

Oh, and I think you'd be well served to carry Speer Gold Dots for personal defense. You can't go wrong there.

Anyways, now that you have it, the most important thing to do is put as many rounds through it as possible to become proficient with it.
At least u had some valuable input, not just an opinion.

There are places to get ammo cheaper. I agree w/. your comment on Kimbers & Colts.
