Curious as to your reasoning.

I understand the lack of maneuverability aspect of a long gun (rifle or shotgun) vs a pistol, but unless you live in a brick house, over-penetration is going to be an issue with anything. Siding, stucco, and what-not isn't going to slow down a round very much, even if it's a hollow-point design. If anything, a medium like that is likely to plug the hollow point and make it act like an FMJ. Kinda like how denim does sometimes.

There are rounds specifically designed to shatter for apt type environments. Im headed out the door but Ill look it up at some point this weekend.

The reason I dont like a shotgun for home defense is:
-High recoil
-Too long
-Only able to fire from one position effectively
-Slower than a semi pistol
-The shot does not spread like everyone will lead you to believe, most shot especially the heavy shot like 00 takes YARDS not feet to spread so that is not an advantage unless youre shooting someone out on your front lawn
-Less magazine capacity than a semi pistol

Revolvers and shotguns IMO are novelty items or for hunting and are worthless for home defense. Just my opinion though as Im sure others disagree.

Yeah, if you can post some info into those frangible rounds, I'd like to see it. I thought I'd heard that they weren't quite as effective, but to be honest I don't remember if there was any hard data to support that claim. Ballistics gel testing and the sort..

Those are some good points on the pistol vs. shotty argument. And I highly agree on the common misconception that "spray and pray" with a shotty is an effective method of defense. Folks just don't think having to aim a shotty for it to be anywhere close to effective. The Box o' Truth website has some good info on this subject.

I still think wielding a shotty makes a formidable defense, but like I said you do make some good points. With everything, you make concessions in some areas for gains in others.

The sound of a shotgun racking is enough to send a chill through most would-be robbers in the first place, and if you had a nice saw'd off barrel shotgun I'm sure it'd spread out pretty quick

I am very comfortable with a shotgun for home defense.

Comfort is what makes a gun good for you . I like the way my S&W feels in my hand. I also like Kimbers and Colts, Never had a Springfield yet but i think i will soon.
Then there are guys like me who own and love them both...

+1 On that. I've owned several XD's and several Glock's over the years, still currently owning both make's. They are both excellent guns, I am not biased but I will say the XD line has been far superior in accuracy compared to the glocks i've owned. I have owned them in 9mm, .40, and .45. But the XD is more comfortable for me so that has something to do with it to.

Nice purchase Scott, you will be more than happy with it. For carry ammo I like the Winchester PDX1 Just make sure you get something that is a bonded bullet. The PDX1's shoot great, they are bonded and they are very reasonably priced. $20/box in my area.

Geez... that hurts bad!!
i reload .40s with a 135-180gr bullet. roughly it cost me $3 per 50

Ive put about 5000 thru my SC and about 4950 of those were reloads.
My service model XD has 15000+ thru it, i shoot competitions with it and practice with it alot.

Ive carried my XD SC.40 in a supertuck deluxe for 3 years now. Love it! I carry it everyday, no kidding. I learned my lesson the hard way and that problem wont ever happen again.

What i find very amusing is alot of guys will swear by one particular brand of firearm and tell everybody its the best yada yada yada.. and they cant shoot worth a flip. Find someone thats humble and willing to help and they will let you shoot any of their guns to help you get a feel for what you might like.
Ive seen alot of guys praise the Glocks and trash talk everything else but when the buzzer goes off at the firing line they completely suck and make excuses. I think its pretty entertaining

I shot two Glocks, didn't really like them all that much. But I shot a KAHR P40, it was AWERSOME. If I make another handgun purchase any time soon, I think I might buy one of those.
