That's a nice little pistol. Check out Wal Mart for ammo. Winchester USA should be about $27 for 100 rounds. I had a 9mm XD service model that I like a lot, but I sold it to get something else. Kind of miss it now........

Having owned both, I prefer Glock. Lower bore axis, easier field strip, they run DRY and theres less to go wrong. The loaded chamber indicator on my XD only came up about half way and no amount of cleaning would fix it.

100 rounds of 40 for $27? That seems way too cheap.

Anyways, now that you have it, the most important thing to do is put as many rounds through it as possible to become proficient with it.
What's not to like about the XD?

The XD put through the Glock Torture Test

20,000 total rounds through it with minimal cleaning, started the torture test after 17,500 rounds were ran through it. Froze it, buried it in dirt/ash/dust, put it in mud, submerged it in water, and degreased the gun of all lubrication oil. It had ZERO problems, no jamming, no nothing.

Ok, you can't really compare gun store ammo prices with Wal Mart. The gun stores buy it at regular price and mark it up to make a profit usually, they don't buy in the quantity Wal Mart does. I've paid $27 for it many, many times. Go check for yourself. They also usually have Federal Champion in 50rd boxes for $13-$14.

What's a good quality ammunition to shoot? I guess I'll rephrase that, what is a good clean ammo to shoot at the range, but is still cheap. And what is a good reliable ammunition to keep at the house for defense?

Very sweet! I'm about to pull the trigger (no pun intended) on a .40 XDM shortly.

Post up how it shoots/feels when you take it to the range.

Most of the FMJ practice ammo is pretty similar in my experience. The only ammo that was noticeably dirtier was Wolf.

As far as defensive ammo you'll get lots of different answers. My suggestion is pick a round you can afford to shoot a couple hundred rounds of to verify function, get a feel for the recoil, and test accuracy in your gun.

Wal Mart will have 135GR Federal HST hollow points in a box of 50 for around $27, they might also have Remington 180gr UMC hollow points for around $40 for 100 and maybe even Winchester USA 180gr hollow points for around the same price. Those are all less expensive loads compared to the "premium" self defense rounds. The premium rounds are usually in a box of 20 and cost a buck or more per round. Remember: shot placement is much more important than having the latest wonder bullet.

Nice gun Scott. Now that I live in Arkansas and I can carry I'll have to look into it after awhile.
