Guns are fun. I love them. I practice safe handling. If you don't have someone to teach you there are always classes or even friendly folk at the range willing to help, if you ask.
Do you know the few basic rules?

Yes I know basic gun safety. I have been to the range a few times, and I just read the manual for this gun. My roommate is an NRA member, and has a CHL in 2 or 3 states if I remember correctly, so when he gets back from vacation I will definitely sit down with him and go over some things.
I might sign up for a few classes here and there when I can to stay in practice with it as well.

what he's saying is that by law it must remain concealed, yes, even when bending or squatting or whatever. If perchance you are reported to have a concealed weapon if someone sees it you may lose that right to carry concealed.
Sorry for the loss of your friend. I do not know the circumstances nor is it relevant, condolences. Carrying a weapon may make you more likely a victom...maybe, I can understand that thought process but I would really rather live a wolf than die a sheep.
