5 weeks is a little young to be bringing a dog home, no? as far as I know they are supposed to stay with their mothers till a minimum of 8 weeks.

with that being said, these dogs can be absolutely batshit crazy. they are GREAT dogs, but need their excercise. I love Australian Shepards. Just give them plenty of play time.

that is a very cute puppy.

Got two of them. Definitely not a dog to keep cooped up in the house constantly, but a very well mannered and intelligent dog. We actually use them to run cattle up on the trailers, believe it or not. They serve as yard/work dogs, and they do both well. ...and they don't like strangers.

My last dog was a mix of a Australian Shepherd and Husky. Pretty smart dog, was really protective of my mom and sister. He didnt bark much tho. Lived bout 10yrs and congestive heart failure got him.
He looked pretty scary with one eye discolored from the mix of husky.

5 weeks is way to early. 7 at a very minimum if you have to but like you said 8 would be ideal.

+1 to exercise. These are a lot like labs and if they do not get a lot of exercise to burn that energy off you will have your hands full.

Beautiful puppy though, love the colors.

Quite possibly the best breed ever! The smartest dog I've been around, and I've been around a few. Very loyal and can be a hell of a force to be reckoned with if getting into it with another dog. My neighbor had a monster of a blue pit that he used as a hog dog. He got loose one day and made the mistake of running into my yard and things got ugly..the pit limped home with a missing ear! Guess breeding dogs to protect herds against wolves paid off. And they are great with kids and most people.
