Default Stereo shuts off, but stays on......

I installed a MTX RT2200 amp and a Subthump enclosure with 2 Road Thunder 4500's in my truck a couple weeks ago. When I really crank it up it kicks the sound out (whole system). But the head unit keeps on playing and I can change stations as if the volume was just turned down. I have double and triple checked the wiring and there are no problems with it. It sounds awesome and has alot of bass, but it seems the more bass the easier it kicks out. I tapped the rear speaker leads and set them up on my high level input. This is probably my 4th system install, and has been the most trying thus far. Please help me figure out what it happening to my HU! Thanks!

I haven't the slightest clue, I have a MTX RT2120 (no longer made) on a single 10" MTX6000 (Q Logic encloure). It's tapped in to the speaker lines just as you described and I have had no issues with it, been that way for over 3 years now

Are sure it is not your amp clipping?

I am down to the assumption that it is the amp. What do you mean by clipping? I swapped out the HU for the Monsoon one in my Z, same problem. All the wiring is good, so my guess is a malfunction in the amp. Thanks for the input!

This link explains it. It also could be from over heating. Make sure your amp is not in an area where it cant cool it self. To see if it is over heating put a fan on high on it and do the same thing that was making it shut off. If it doesn't shut off then it is clipping or a bad amp.

Hey thanks for the help! It isn't overheating because it will do it right from the start. I think it is a junk amp, I got it used anyhow. Thanks!

Well I have 2 CVR 10's being pushed by a KickerZX750.1 amp and I was having problems similar I would be bumping it hard and when I took off from a light you could see my voltage spike and the amp would shut off but the deck would continue working with no bass. Is that what you are trying to describe? If so my install guy ran a the ground to the negative terminal of the battery and since then no voltage spikes. I dont know the technicalities of why that fixed it but I Hope that helps.

Similar, only not just the bass kicks out, all sound kicks out. I will check into that... Thanks for the heads up!

I have Clarion amps and had a similar problem with the amp connected to my components clipping. I ended up having a bad ground. I realize it's your entire system shutting down, but I would check all of your grounds first and work from there since you swapped amps and it still did the same thing.
