Need Help Replacing An Old Truck's Stereo
#1
Hey guys,
My little brother is turning 16 next week, and my parents have bought him a 1989 Chevy Silverado single cab. It's very clean and was taken very well care of by the previous owner. There's almost nothing wrong with it, and I'm fixing the things that need to be replaced/repaired. The only problem I've run into so far is the stereo. I want to install an aftermarket CD player to the where the factory tape player is located right now (one DIN sized). I don't really want to take it to a shop because they'll charge me out the wazoo for it, and it's an old truck so I really can't justify spending so much money on it. I was just wanting to know if anyone has done this recently? Is there a write up anywhere like on car domain or anything that you guys know about? I wired up the stereo in my old Talon, so I'm not a complete boob when it comes to electronics, I just need a guide to help me out before I start cutting wires and get in over my head. Thanks a lot.

if it has the stock stereo why dont you get a plug in converter that will take the old plug that goes in the stock location and insert into the stereo that way you dont have to be cutting and splicing stuff.

Dunno if you did it yet or not, but I believe in that year you'll have to take out the two-**** radio and cut the metal so that a DIN sized radio will fit in. There might be a slight gap in the top since the factory is a bit larger in the middle. Follow the other guys advice and get the harness. Makes life soo much easier. Just match up the colors and solder/crimp and be done!
Good luck.

Get a harness and the trim kit that is made for these trucks. We put a DIN sized unit in my dad's 88 Chevy this way. It even came with a CD storage bin that replaced the radio section, although it's kinda useless because the CDs fly out when ever you accelerate. Crutchfield makes a nice kit with good instructions and it's all free if you buy the head unit from them.
freyguy, i think you're referring to the 73-87 trucks. I remember I had to take out the 2 **** radio and cut the metal dash to fit a DIN sized CD player in my old 84. Again, Crutchfield made the job simple.

i believe the radio and tape player both plug into one receiver back behind the ash tray. I just got an adapter for the harness and went to town. Think I took the ash tray out and also the panel the tape player goes into.
I would suggest getting the head unit from crutchfield cause they will give you everything you need for the install as someone mentioned before.
I added a solo baric behind the seat in mine and with the aftermarket receiver putting more power to the stock speakers, it sounded good enough for me. Im not real big on bass and what not.
