Default Tell me about the south

I'll be done with grad school in May, and I'm going to entertain the option of relocating when I get my next job. I've always been somewhat intrigued with the thought of living in Texas or in the south, but I've never been before and I'm not at all familiar with any of it.

So....tell me about the south. Tell me about Texas. Where do you live, where would you live, what would you tell someone who has never visited before about the areas, the people, etc etc. Basically, give me a quick lesson about the different areas, demographics, job market, weather, real estate market condition, entertainment, geography, types of towns and cities...whatever you think would be beneficial to know.

Florida and California are nice . . . if you can afford it

Houston is hotter than AZ . . . you're going to sweat here in the summers, it's not the desert heat that you're used to.

What is your degree in?

Texas has a very diverse economy. Dallas has more opportunities in Finance, Transportation, and light manufacturing. Houston is headquarters for most of the major oil companies in the world and there is a lot of oil refining and petrochemical manufacturing. Also a lot of import-export through the Houston Ship Channel.

The summers are hot, but everything is air conditioned so it's not a problem for the most part. Our winters are mild here in Houston - everybody thinks it's a cold night when the temp gets down to 50. April and November are great!

The nightlife is great in Houston and Dallas but probably the best is in Austin. Austin is known for the bars with top quality live musicians. Austin is also known as the "Hill Country" - It's a drier climate than the coast with lots of lakes and rivers for water sports.

A bunch of the guys from PT.net go to Houston Raceway Park ("HRP") on the weekends for some good 1/4 mi. drag racing. I've heard of a 1/8 mile strip too but I don't know much about it. Roundy-round racing is available too..

Of course we have the pro sports. Astros, Texans, Rockets, and Dynamo (pro soccer) in Houston. Cowboys, Mavericks, Rangers, and Stars (NHL) in Dallas. The Texas Longhorns are the next best thing to a pro sports franchise in Austin.

Real estate is very reasonably priced in Texas. You can get a lot of home for the money. Prices have not declined as much as other markets in the news - like California and Florida.

I hope that this helps. Tell us more about what you are looking for!

I have a bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering and I'm getting my MBA. I'll probably be looking to get into project management. Been looking into the nuclear industry, seems like a good field with the expected shortages happening at the same time as the predicted growth, but I haven't set myself on that exclusively yet. I want something that's a mix of on-site and office work. I think I'd get tired of either one exclusively.

I like outdoors stuff, but I get bored fishing and I've never been hunting. I'm more of the recreation/camping/hiking kind of person when it comes to outdoors stuff.

I've heard that TX is hot and humid...is that everywhere or just specific parts?

I know the Dallas/Fort Worth area is not that humid, just hot. IMO I would never work in the Dallas area, but that is were the money is. I just can't stand to sit in traffic, but that is just me.... I live on the south side of fort worth. It is nice here, close to the country, which is where me and my GF want to build when we get married. House is cheap here in my area since the realestate crisis they have going on, you could pick up a brand new house for dirt cheap, at least that is what i did!!!! So your and IE with an MBA, wanna shoot me your resume and I can see what we have available up at my work, (You like military aircraft?). How many years experience do you have?

Oh and the chicks here are pretty damn Hot as well!!!!

I think that nuclear is getting ready to go up big time. We have some really great engineering and construction companies here: KBR and Fluor just to name a couple.

The whole state gets hot in the summer but the humidity is only bad along the coast.
