So just clean it up and a couple of new pistons and it'd be ok or is there something deeper? If its just pistons just pick up some 4.8 flat tops; I've been dying to see someone try this.

Sucks about the problems man.

Why not? Its a 5.3 isn't it? The pin heights are the same between the two piston sizes (or from what I've seen).

From what I understand (and makes sense) If both the 4.8 and 5.3 have the same bore (truth) then the stroke is different. Meaning either, the 4.8 has shorter rods, or the piston pin is at different heights. If you use the 4.8 pistons, they will protrude the top of the block at the top of the stroke.

I always thought they had different cranks. Based your comment... assuming the cranks were the same, shorter rods would lessen the compression with piston not rising as close to the heads as a 5.3L with (possibly) longer rods. The comment below does not seem to support the rod difference theory. Anyone have any more info on this??? Dealer part comparison???

TurboGibbs on here I think said that the pin heights were the same. The 4.8 has longer rods and a shorter crank. Here's an interesting thread on it:
