Default gauge malfunction

I got an 04 RST and my rpm gauge has decided to do its own thing. It jumps to about 4k and wont go below 3 1/2k. It climbs at normal rate but sputters when declining. Pulled them out and cant seem to get it right. Since its a stick, I really need some help. Thanks

BTW the Regency parts are the only ones that ever break on my truck!!!!

does the speedo work fine? it seems to me that the stepper motors are on their way out. chances are you'll need a new cluster. mine did almost the same thing but mine it was the speedo acting up.

The speedo stuttered too when decreasing speed. But it worked fine increasing and went back to 0. How much did your new set of gauges run you?

Typical stepper motor problem it sounds. They can be replaced if you are handy with a soldering iron.

ya i can mange the ol' solder but where are the stepper motors located? I took the cluster out and if you open the back, theres a "motherboard" across the whole back. And I tried to take the needles off, but didnt want to fool around with it too much. Not too much on this type of thing

Are the stepper motor model numbers the same as a diesel?

Well the needles are attached to the shaft of the stepper motors. You can pick up the motors for about $10 on E-bay best I remember. I replaced the speedo and tach on mine.

Before you pull the gauge cycle the key and get the needles to reset themselves. Mark the exact location of the needles before you pull them off. I put masking tape on the over lay and marked the exact spot they were pointing to. Just pull straight out on them and they will pop off. Dismantle the cluster to the PCB board. Unsolder the old motor, have to get all the solder out so I bought one of the little suckers at radio shack. Solder the new on. Re-assemble the gauge and go.

Put heat to them with the iron on the back side of the board. melt the solder and use a "sucker" (don't know its real name) to pull the solder out of the joint. The motor should just pull out when done. You can see it in one of the pictures. Blue thing.

You'll have fun getting the needles back right if you don't mark them. If you haven't removed the overlay. Put it back in the truck and turn the key on, the needles will re-zero. Don't touch thme and mark the overlay.
