Start with something rough, something in the 150'ish range. Then go to a 220 grit, then I would go with a 400'ish...from there I would go to a 400'ish grit ceramic stone to polish them out. Then you could go up and up with stone's. They take awhile but look very nice when finished!

I use 3M Polishing paper to polish my wheels. You can find it online. Spray some WD40 it and go. I start with 400 grit... go to 600, 1200, and 4000. Makes them like glass.

no!
If you have bad spots i dont see why you would nee anything courser than 1000 grit, the sanding scratches you put in it have to be buffed out.

i agree, but he needs to get them smooth and it would take forever with 1000!! I would personally start with 360 then step up. Go to your local auto paint store and ask for some 3M wet/dry paper, 360 - 600 - 1000 - 1500. Use this paper wet.

Normally when you are trying to polish out regular metal to a polished finish it takes ALOT of work.

Start with the following and work your way thru the stages:

400
600
1000
1500
2000
3000

Polish with a glaze for a mirror finish. Also know that after each step for instance the 600 gritt is used to get the 400 gritt scratches gone, then the 1000 gritt is used to get the 600 gritt scratches gone and so forth, take your time, cause if you miss any 400 gritt scratches and you are allready using 1000 its going to take you awhile

If the polish turns black, they are bare aluminum.
I want to see some pics, is it a brushed aluminum?
