I am curious on the forged Short block components you chose.

Any specific reason why chose those brands?

I just got good deals on a lot of the stuff over time as I pieced it together lol.

Here's somewhat of an explanation:
I have more faith in the finish machining of the GM crankshaft than a lot of the aftermarket stuff, and hell, the non forged cranks are strong as hell! The connecting rods I got a great deal on. Any decent name brand 4340 rod I was OK with, and callies has a good rep from what I can tell. The pistons I just wanted a good quality 2618 piston with stainless rings and good wrist pins. I found a good deal on wiseco and went for it. I was happy with the size of the top ring land and the gram weight of the piston I chose so it seemed to be a great fit for me. I'm not shooting for 1500 HP, just more than your run of the mill maggie 370 build.

I was looking into getting forged rods and pistons and I haven't decided on what to get.

On the stock cranks, I usually send them out for a process called Ion Nitrating.

It's weird I'm mixed on the stock cranks.. I've broke a couple dunno if nitriding would help that or make it more brittle but if you want to give it a whirl mile high crankshaft can do this process Rob.. (They repaired the Tbss crank recently btw) great work! But I'd assume it would be beneficial. Make sure you take the crank gear off as well as the key way it will be ruined in the heat treating process.. The crank will be straitened and polished as well.

There is several process' that can be performed on cranks.

With the Ion Nitriding they heat the crank up using an electric current to a certain temp under vacuum.

This process is carried out in a vacuum vessel where a high-voltage electrical charge forms plasma, causing nitrogen ions to accelerate and impinge on the metal. When the nitrogen ions bombard the part they heat up the metal, clean the surface, and absorb nitrogen into the surface. Depending on the temperature, the metallurgy, and the time the process is performed you can case harden the material up to .020 . It has several benefits including improving the wear characteristics of the part.

There is also a process of Cryo treating Which brings the temp down slowly to like 300 below zero. This is supposed to help align the grain structure and make the part more durable and wear resistant.

There is more processes and we could go on for ever about it.

 

I'll just stick with the LSA crank as it comes from GM lol

They use it in the LSx376B15 motors.
