blown3qtr's 4L80E rebuild thread is a great source of info... post #5 in his thread briefly discusses what the longer cooler adaptor feeds into (in the aft port).

very good Bill, thanks, so it might not be a good idea to switch to a shallow fitting that doesn't seat into the aft port?

... not sure bro... maybe JamesB or Vince from FLT can chime in... looks like a support of some kind. I am curious as well. I had planned on modifying the existing longer adaptor by machining/welding -6AN adaptor to it.

I ran my cooler the same way you are looking at doing. I purchased a line that was cut and had -6an fittings welded to it so I could just make a set of high pressure lines real easy. Use all the factory hard lines and just cut and weld the return line from the radiator cooler to your aux cooler.

You can see in the picture below that the hard line coming out of the radiator was cut and welded to allow the cooler to be added in-line.
