My turn. lq4/4l80 swap(GOING BOOST PG. 4)
#31
Well, the truck has been burning a little oil here lately. Installed some valve seals yesterday, and it appeared to have cleared up all visual oil burning. I guess in the next week, i'll monitor it closely and see if that stops all the smoking.
I will have to admit with my extra motor lying around, I keep on thinking of going turbo. I flipped some of my exhaust manifolds on my old 5.3 today. Ideas, Ideas...........

It will definitely be easier to do the next go around since I've done it before. I can't speak highly enough about these trans. They just feel solid and the gear ratios are so much better, IMO. It actually shifts where you tell it to in the tune too. The old 4l60 would shift about 300 rpms higher than I commanded.

I figured I would do a little update on this. Did my first oil change about 2 weeks ago. The truck is running good. I'm ready for some more mods. Here's a speedo clip I took of the truck the other day.

GOING BOOST
Disclaimer: This is my first attempt at boost. Any advice or opinions are welcome. Most of this is inspired from denmah, as I am on a very tight budget. I do realize this turbo is undersized, but my goals are low currently and I did not want to invest a huge amount on my first build. If it makes it that far, I will upgrade to a borg warner 400 series turbo or the vsracing 80mm. Who knows, the turbo may gernade, take the motor out with it, and then I sell it. Either way, I intend on learning something new so take it easy on me guys.
Current part list:
Hptuners vcm suite-installed
Innovative lc1 wideband-installed
Autometer boost gauge-installed
China GT45 69mm compressor-sitting in parts pile
China 60mm gate w/ vbands-sitting in parts pile
T4 flange-sitting in parts pile
3 t4 gaskets-sitting in parts pile
oil feed/return flanges and gaskets-sitting in parts pile
2.25 mandrel bends-sitting in parts pile
2.25 crossover pipe 8'-sitting in parts pile
gt45 downpipe vband-sitting in parts pile
obx 2.25 mild steel vband-sitting in parts pile
external walbro 255- sitting in parts pile
cxracing 3" 31x12x3 intercooler and piping kit-shipped
3.75" to 3" silicone 90 degree coupler-shipped
Left to order:
60lb or 80lb dekas- would like to find some used to save some coin
BOV-Still considering this. Some people swear by them, others say they are not necessary.
Efans-Going to scrounge the junkyards monday to see if I can find some. If not, I'm just going to order some ls1 fans.
Oil lines- Going to see if the local part store can come up with these monday.
Flex pipes- Already checked the local exhaust shop. Just have to go pick these up.
Down piping-Possibly going to check and see if I can find some piping local. May have to order some
3 bar map and upgraded os- Low on the priority list, as I plan to start low on the boost and work my way up.
Insert whatever else I'm missing
Todays Progress:
Got it tore down the best I could. Got the oil pan off to be fitted for the oil drain. I'm probably going to take it to my welder to have a bung welded up. Also got the headers/exhaust off and the turbo sitting in there. Still undeceided on final placement. I plan on running the hotpipes similar to what 03rcsb did on his home grown boost build. Heres some pics:
Oh, the ridiculious expensive turbo

Well I'm running into a few fittmemt problems with the gt45.
PARTS UPDATE:
Intercooler arrived as did my silicon coupler for the throttle body. I'm still in need of oil lines and a weld in bung for my oil pan. Anyone know any inexpensive options for this?
I guess I underestimated the size of the gt45 compared to mp70. I cant fit it under the hood with the turbo being any above the manifold. I may just have to man up and spend the coin on the kbracing log. It would save me from having to buy efans, plug wires, and having to relocate my overflow.

[Got the KB manifold in. This is an excellent piece.
Also got my crossover tacked up. I went with 2.25 because I wanted the most ground clearance I could get since my truck drags on everything. I also offset the flex pipe so I could tuck the crossover up closer to my dust shield. Got the pipe coped for the waste gate, but I'm going to wait until I get my downpipe built before I put the waste gate in its final location.
