Default Moneypitts 2500HD 408 build

I figured I would start a build thread, I am planning a NA 408 build for my 03 2500hd CCSB. I am building the bottom end for nitrous and possible boost in the future, compression will be figured for NA with nitrous and if I do decide to go turbo or supercharger in the future I will change heads to adjust compression. I found a junk yard 2003 LQ4 that has piston slap for $650.00

The bad part was it is four hours from me, I went to try and get it today and made it almost there and got turned back because of a wildfire that is burning in the area where the auto wrecker is located. I hope this is not an omen for this build.

Just curious where are you aiming this build, lowered street truck or using it as a 2500hd still?

Sounds like its gonna be a monster, someday id like a 408...

The truck is going to be a work truck during the week with a gross weight of 8500 lbs, and track queen on the weekends. I have a removable work canopy that is like a enclosed camper, it can be removed fully loaded in about 15 minutes . I plan on setting it up like my 09 duramax, it runs high 12s in the quarter mile at 7200lbs race weight. I am planning on refreshing the 6.0L that is in it now so if I hurt the new 408 I can just swap the 6.0 back in if needed.

So the build so far is planned for:

Manley LS Rotating Assembly, 408 cid.
PRC L92 CNC Ported Heads.
FAST LSXR 102mm LS3 Intake Manifold with 102mm Throttle Body and fuel rail kit.
New headers and exhaust needs figured out.
Custom cam shaft, looking at Straub Custom Camshafts.
Need to figure out fuel upgrades.

First order of business is I need to figure out what pistons would be best to go with to be able to lower my compression ratio in the future by changing the heads if I decide to go FI, any ideas?

I plan on 92 octane pump gas.

How much boost do you want to run in the future? I would put -15cc dish pistons in there and get your LS3 heads down to 65cc or so. That should put your compression at 10.5:1 NA. Then when you boost it, you can throw some 72cc chambers on there and have a 9.7:1 boost motor.

I Don't really know, I might not even go boosted. I just want to make sure I don't screw up on my piston choice and make it harder to go that route if I ever decide to. So you think a 10.5:1 compression would be the best for NA on 92 pump gas?

No I think 11.0:1 static would be best in NA form on pump gas but if it was my truck and I knew I might want to go boosted, I would make the compromise and run it at 10.5. You might not even notice the difference between the two.

Don't make the same mistake as me when I built my 408. I ran -3cc flat top wiseco pistons. With my LS3 heads and the gasket I ran, I was running 11.4:1 compression NA. It ran really good. There was torque everywhere. But I was screwed if I ever wanted to put boost through it. Yea I could run 10lbs on it but that gets old after a while.

I just did some math and figured with -15cc dish pistons, a cometic 4.060 bore 0.040" thickness head gasket, 65cc combustion chambers, and the piston 0.010" out of the hole, you would be sitting at 10.7:1 static. Then if you boost it, you could throw some 72cc chamber heads on it, and LS9 head gaskets, you could drop a full point of compression. 9.7:1 would be great for boost. That is about as good as it gets for compromise.

Well they don't make a -15cc they have a -10cc and -18cc it looks like the 10cc would put me at about 10.57:1 on the calculator on Summit with 66cc combustion chambers, but one question on that calculator they have "Deck Clearance" what does that refer to? Is that the out of the hole number?

This is the rotating assem I am looking at with the ARP2000 rod bolts.

Oh I missed the part about the Manley assembly. Any reason why you want to only use Manley?
