Im thinking it's a collapsed lifter. I can push down the pushrod with the rocker by hand all the others are very firm and don't budge. Does that sound like a collapsed rocker?

Well, I drained the oil and found a few of these. Talk about depressing!! I got under the truck and started pulling the pan, couldn't get the cross member off under the pan so i rolled the truck back in the garage and called it a day. The motivation to work on the truck today went out. Back to work work tomorrow the truck will get some love Monday. Also ill be dropping the spare 408ci off to a real engine builder Monday in case this motor is fubar

Quick question, and it may have nothing to do with your issue, what timing chain and oil pump are you using?

I've seen similar debris in oil before and it was due to the timing chain hitting the oil pump and just lightly scrubbing some aluminum off the pump housing. Even motors that appear to have plenty clearance on the stand I've seen do this once they are running.

Also, you say the next motor is going to a "real engine builder". Who built this one?

That does sound like a collapsed lifter, are you using a single or double row chain?

What would the possibility be of finding a jy type 5.3 or something like that on the cheap to throw in there while the 408 is getting built? It would allow you to work any bugs out on a motor that you don't care about......

I'd say pretty slim don't wanna start stocking up on motors and taking up extra space . I ended up taking the day off from the truck today didn't even step in the garage today
