So the one we use at work looks like the "Miniature Suction Strainer with 1-1/2 Female Unthreaded Pipe Connection" Style from Mcmaster carr.
I just could not get a spec on what mesh they actually use. The biggest pump Flows 23 GPM on the clean side and the chiller is rated at 90,000 BTU
The # 20 size mesh it the largest mesh on that style filter which is .0328 -.0331 and # 4 mesh is .185 -.187 depending on whos conversion chart you look at...
Any way food for thought....

If we can suck closed the normal reinforced PVC hose that is not rated for vacuum at 23 GPM in 80* weather. What will happen at 50GPM???
My thought was that if you blocked part of that strainer, it might become restricted. Part of why I thought a few holes in the top of it might be beneficial. Enough restriction can cause the pump to cavitate. Also should vent the cooler so it doesn't suck itself in.
It's all big science experiment to me...
